Welcome to White Witch School ! It’s very exciting that you will be starting or taking your magical journey to the next level. Here we will discuss a few basics of witchcraft and the art of being a good witch.

How to Start in Witchcraft

Starting your witchy journey simply starts by accepting and embracing the path you were given. It’s not necessarily a chosen path, but one that is preempted for you by your ancestors or elders. Chances are, somewhere in your family tree was a witch, a seer, or a healer and this is what has led you on this path. Many people come to me and say they watched “Charmed” as a kid or witchy shows and wanted to explore the side of witchcraft. I say to them, “It’s not just the show. The jest of it all woke something in your DNA”. So, now that you know you were destined into witchcraft, let’s begin.

What is Witchcraft?

Witchcraft is projected energy, hopeful manifestations, and concentration used to achieve a specific goal. It’s light, love, prayer, all of these things. Sometimes witches dabble in the darkness, and although I am Pagan and a practicing witch, I personally do not condone using witchcraft for anything sinister or evil.

Rule #1 of White Witch School: Stay in the Light.

One must be very careful on their journey as their gifts and experiences will elevate, you can erroneously curse someone in the worst way, sometimes, without even knowing it. Just remember all of this energy when let into the universe comes back to you. I’m sure you’ve heard of the power of three, henceforth remember not just good can come back to you but often bad in triple fold as well. Therefore, you must be cautious along your path and take a vow to be a White Witch simply meaning STAY OUT OF THE DARK CRAFT. Many of these types of witches listed below practice in the grey areas, the veil between the dark and the light.

Rule #2: Determine What Witch You Are, and What Path Suits You

Starting in witchcraft is simply taking the first steps to determine how you want to practice and what path you choose to take. I hate to say labels matter but knowing the type of witch you plan to be may indeed help along the journey. Here is a list of some popular witchery (but not all) and perhaps one (or more of these) best describes you. If you find something below, that may be closest to you, click on the link to start the journey!

Green Witch (Go here!) The Green Witch is nature based and doesn’t necessarily need any other labels. Sometimes they are a Solitary Witch, but usually find their time best in Nature, using elements found there in their craft. They may or may not practice Wicca or celebrate the Sabbats, as they are truly focused on Mother Nature and all she has to offer.

Solitary Witch / Hedge Witch – These witches came from those who lived outside the towns by themselves in a solitary cottage. and could very well also be a green witch. Imagine breaching the hedge of the town and wandering out into the forest to find an old woman who practiced witchcraft. She was solitary in her craft and kept to herself. This type of witch may or may not practice Wicca. However, it’s clear she, or he likes to be alone in their work.

Kitchen Witches – Believe it or not, maybe your granny who was always cooking up something in the kitchen was one of these. These witches feel most active when brewing or cooking up a soup. Whether using bone broth or making herbal teas, these witches feel at their peak cooking something up in the kitchen!

Wiccan Witches – These witches follow the Wicca religion, celebrate the Sabbats and use the deities in their work. These are Gods and Goddesses that aid and help in their particular spells. The official “Wicca religion” was introduced in 1954 by the teachings of Gerald Gardner. It’s considered a religion, a movement, and has much published work. It is perhaps the largest SECT of witchcraft today, so finding others to help you in this journey will be easy. They may also identify with other forms of witchcraft for example, a Wiccan Solitary Witch may practice Wicca, alone.

Fairy Witches – These witches draw upon their energy from the Fae, often stemming back to Italy (Diana, Lady of the Lake), Scotland (Fae) or Europe. They frolic in the realms of nature, enjoy the wildflowers, are kind hearted souls, and spread light and love using many natural elements in their work. You will find the fae meek but merry and conjuring up tinctures and natural potions. They may or may not practice Wicca religion.

Norse Witches – These witches are in tune with Germanic Roots and early Viking Age deities like Odin, Freyia, and often practice a form of pagan magick called seiðr , not generally following traditional Wicca religion as their Gods and Goddesses are extremely different and date back to Nordic culture. This magic incorporates bones, stones and earth elements . They may resonate as healers or seers.

Gypsy Witch – These witches stem from Romania and prior to that date back as early as Byzantine Greece, Persia and India. These types of witches feel drawn to Tarot Cards and / or Tea Leaves. Some feel a connection to Vlad the Impaler and have a keen sense of vampires, the other world and divination with gems and crystals. They may or may not follow the Wiccan religion, some do, and most don’t.

VooDoo Witches – These draw from Haitian or African cultures, enjoy ritualistic celebrations including chanting, dancing, and use of effigies made of straw, bones, claw, or leather. Charms are also used, as well as natural elements. They also enjoy making “voo doo dolls” to help in their work. They are skilled in making tonics and tinctures to drink for medicinal purposes, often referred to as the village medicine man or woman. There is also a big presence in Louisiana. They generally do not follow Wicca. They may or may not resonate with HooDoo Witchcraft.

HooDoo Witches – These are the rootworkers, conjurers, conjure doctors and both men and woman draw from their African heritage. They use natural elements, roots, herbs in tinctures and potions to help people heal from various troubles. Many recipes have been passed down for generations and they enjoy celebrations and helping others. They may or may not also resonate with VooDoo. They generally do not practice Wicca sabbats, but follow many ways and laws of nature.

Pagan Witch : This is a broad term to identify oneself as not a form of the major Catholic or Christian based religions. The Pagan witch may or may not fall into any other categories.

Now, with all that said, it’s time to decide which best describes you. If you are unsure, it’s okay, as all of that identification of oneself will come in time.
